The Mountain Shadows Hotel is situated amongst the picturesque mountains of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains, in the heart of the Eastern Cape. In the Drakensberg range, each season has its own beauty and sandstone formations form part of the environment. The hotel is at the top of the Barkly Pass with a height of 1990 meter above sea level. It is on the scenic R58 Route between Barkly-East (42 km) and Elliot (22 km) - where the R393 route from Rhodes (70 km) joins the R58 route.
Mountain Shadows Hotel is the perfect halfway house between Natal and Eastern/Western Cape. This Country Hotel is ideally situated between the Inland of SA and the South Coast / Wild Coast.
The main building consists of a convivial lounge with a big-screen TV, dining room and bar. Three fireplaces burning on cold summers days as well as through the winter. There are 20 sleeping units each consisting of 2 or 3 bedrooms with own bathroom. Each unit has a TV, heater, kettle and cups. Cozy linen and electric blankets are provided for each bed.
All activities below need to be booked 48 hours in advance and a 50% deposit is required.
Besides, 2 self-walk walking trails around the hotel , all the other activities are not at the mountain shadows .
A day camp can also be provided at an extra cost for the hosts to look after your young ones while you are riding your horse or doing fly fishing
Horse riding
We offer horse riding packages for the family, from 30 minutes for kids ride, to sunset rides as well as full moon rides for the family, swimming with horses in the river is another option. These Packages vary on skills and time spend on the horses.
River Picnic
We have a few options on the river picnic for adults and families as well as Romantic option including snacks
Hiking trails
We offer trails suitable for hikers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced.. A Maximum of 5 hours is permitted for a trail
Fishing / fly fishing
The fishing activity is combined with either the horse riding or hiking or both. We also have a day camp to look after your little ones while you are out and about
Hunting
Our hunting season is from May to August and our prices are very compatible. Various buck and smaller animals can be hunted for the young ones or beginners. We also offer the slaughter of animals. Hunters are required to bring their own rifles and ammunition and will have to shoot on a range before hunting.

Cave and Rock paintings
Cave and rock paintings on guided tour at neighbouring farm. In this area of the Eastern Cape, you will find many rock art sites. These Bushman paintings or rock art, painted by the San
thousands of years ago are just a short drive from mentioned towns and can be viewed in a day. Guided tours can be done when guides are available.
Bird watching
The area offers the opportunity to see birds that are not commonly seen in other areas because they only occur above a certain sea level. Species more commonly sighted on the Naudes Nek Pass are the Ground Woodpecker, Orange-breasted Rockjumper and Drakensberg Siskin. The hotel is the ideal base to view birds on the Bottelnek and Bastervoetpad trails. There are more than 120 bird species in this area of the Eastern Cape which includes rare species. These rare species - to mention only a few - are the Black Stork, Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier), Black Harrier, Black Eagle, Cape vulture, Grass Bird and Cape Rock Thrush. This area of the Eastern Cape is well known for its diverse Flora and some of the most beautiful plants are found here.
